President
Omar Powell is a distinguished leader and inclusion advocate within the insurance industry, with a proven track record of driving innovation and fostering diversity. As an Assistant Vice President for Middle Market at Sompo International, Omar oversees the South-Atlantic Zone, spearheading Property and Casualty production across the Carolinas and Kentucky. A proud alumnus of Howard University, where he majored in Finance with a concentration in Risk Management and Insurance, Omar has consistently leveraged his expertise to deliver impactful results while remaining deeply committed to his university community and the broader goals of diversity and inclusion within the industry.
During his undergraduate tenure, Omar served as President of Howard University’s chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, the international fraternity for risk management, insurance, and actuarial science. He further demonstrated his visionary leadership by founding GammaS.A.I.D. (Solutions for Authenticity, Inclusion, and Diversity), Gamma Iota Sigma’s national center of expertise on diversity and inclusion. His pioneering work earned him the honor of presenting at the 2016 Lloyd’s of London Dive-In Festival in Columbus, Ohio, and he continued contributing to this initiative as a member of the GammaS.A.I.D. Industry Council. Omar’s dedication to advancing insurance education persists through his role on the Howard University Center for Insurance Education Advisory Board.
Omar’s influence extends beyond academia into his professional and community endeavors. As the Charter President of the Charlotte Chapter of the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA), Omar champions initiatives that empower underrepresented professionals in the field, a commitment shaped by his own experiences as the 2016 recipient of NAAIA’s prestigious Jerald L. Tillman Endowed Scholarship. Previously, he served on the external board of NAAIA’s New York Tri-State chapter before relocating to Charlotte in 2020. Beyond his industry contributions, Omar is a dedicated community leader, a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, and a host of the podcast Callaloo & Collard Greens, which explores African-American and Caribbean family dynamics.
Residing in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his wife Aliyah, their son Langston, and their pug Stella, Omar embodies the ethos of servant leadership. He is guided by the principle, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.”

Adeelah has served as a claim leader for the past six years, initially in auto liability claims and more recently in workers compensation. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Finance and an MBA from Liberty University. Beyond her core responsibilities, she actively promotes community engagement and inclusion.
In addition to serving on the executive board of the Charlotte chapter of NAAIA, she leads a local Community Connections group focused on organizing volunteer and fundraising events, helping to foster diversity and leadership within the industry.
Her involvement with NAAIA began after attending the 2023 National Conference in Columbus, Ohio as a non-member, an experience that deeply inspired her both personally and professionally. Motivated by the powerful connections and insights she gained, she joined the Charlotte chapter and quickly stepped into an executive board role to help drive its mission forward.
Among her proudest accomplishments is the impact she’s had on developing others. “As a leader, nothing is more rewarding than seeing team members grow in confidence and capability, knowing that my influence has played a part in their success is the true measure of my own.”

Shavon Bell is a dedicated insurance professional who brings more than a decade of experience in underwriting, risk evaluation, and client engagement. As a Senior Associate Underwriter with Amerisure, she combines strategic thinking with a people-first approach, helping agencies and partners find solutions that drive success and strengthen relationships.
In addition to serving as the Public Relations/Marketing chair for the NAAIA Charlotte chapter, Shavon is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, and a sustaining member of the Junior League of Charlotte. Her passion for service also extends through her previous service with the organization, Talented Girls in Action and the Urban League of Central Carolinas Young Professionals Auxiliary where she focused on empowerment, leadership development, and community advancement.
Shavon holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from Benedict College.

Carlos Lewis has been the Vice President of Claims Experience with Selective Insurance since 2021. He previously served as VP of Claims Regional Operations from 2018 to 2021. Before joining Selective in June 2017, Carlos served as Assistant Vice President for Safeco Insurance, where he was responsible for a large Auto Physical Damage Center. He also held several leadership positions with Liberty Mutual and Travelers Insurance.
Carlos attended the University of Kentucky and is a member of the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA). He is also a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.
Carlos currently serves on the boards of the NAAIA Charlotte Chapter, the Lexington African American Sports Hall of Fame, and the Kappa Tau Alumni Association. He previously served on the Lincoln Heights Church Trustee Board and Lincoln Heights Outreach Incorporated.

Nic Gaither is the Work Comp Unit Manager for Amerisure Insurance Company, where he manages a workers’ compensation team handling claims for Tennessee, Mississippi, Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., Colorado, and Nevada. With over 30 years of experience in claims and 18 years in management, he has made a significant impact on Amerisure’s culture since joining in 2016, earning recognition as an Amerisure Champion in 2019.
Beyond his operational role, Nic is deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. He currently serves as a DEI Ambassador for Amerisure and sits on the Board of Directors for Programming in the NAAIA Charlotte Chapter.
His dedication to promoting DEI in the insurance industry earned him the distinction of being the first recipient of the 2023 LEAD (Leadership in Equity and Diversity) Award from RISE Professionals.

Howard Beckwith serves as Regional Vice President for Construction, Energy, & Marine (CEM) in the Mid-Atlantic region with Travelers Insurance. In this role, Howard is responsible for setting the strategic direction and decisions which support profitable growth and development of the CEM businesses across the territory. He is recognized for his leadership in guiding and developing high-performing teams and fostering a collaborative environment that drives success across multiple specialty areas.
As an advocate for the industry, Howard promotes opportunities within insurance through his engagement with industry-focused professional organizations and service on various boards.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Howard enjoys live music, travel, reading, volunteering, and spending quality time outdoors with his wife Rachel and their dog Sadie.

Angela Taylor, RIMS-CRMP, CRM, is a distinguished risk management executive recognized for her innovative and holistic approach to enterprise risk. As a Senior Vice President of Large and Complex Risk at Gallagher, Angela delivers solution-focused strategies tailored to client needs and leads initiatives that help organizations navigate complex risk environments with clarity and confidence.
Her career spans leadership roles at top brokerage firms and Fortune 500 companies across industries including gaming, hospitality, oil and gas, and financial services. Angela is known for driving transformative change and reducing the total cost of risk through forward-thinking strategies and collaborative leadership.
Angela holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Connecticut and maintains certifications as a RIMS-Certified Risk Management Professional and Certified Risk Manager. She is also a licensed Property and Casualty Producer in South Carolina.
A passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion, Angela serves on the DEI Advisory Council for RIMS and has been an active board member of the Charlotte Chapter of the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) since its inception. Her commitment to inclusive leadership and industry innovation continues to inspire professionals across the risk and insurance landscape.
